Choosing a Vendor
Many people offer Debian DVDs and CDs for sale, as can be seen from the list on the Debian web site. Obviously I would like it if you purchased from me, but here's a quick guide on how to choose a vendor. I'll try to be impartial!
I believe Linux people are generally honest. And organised crime isn't attracted by Linux's small price tags. In short, you are unlikely to be ripped off. But you might find yourself disappointed, either because what you you ordered isn't what you really needed, or because your vendor is .... well, lazy.
Follow this guide when choosing a vendor.
Make sure you get the right version of Debian
The current version of Debian is revision 4 of "etch" - 4.0r5. Make sure you do not order a "Sarge" release - it belongs in a museum. Also make sure you do not order version 4.0r4 which is missing a number of important updates.
Make sure you get the full release
Debian is a big distribution. Unless you really know what you are doing, make sure you get the full release - all 3 DVDs. If the vendor doesn't state the number of disks you will receive, query it with them. Finding out that you need even one package on a DVD you haven't got can really ruin your day.
Postage and Packing
Postage and packaging costs can form a large part of the price you pay. Make sure your vendor is "up front" about these costs, or includes P+P in the base price.
